Sometimes we need a story.

Not because we don't have enough going on in our own lives, but because a good story gives us a chance to step outside of them for a little while.

We get to enter another world.

We meet characters we've never known before, yet somehow they can begin to feel familiar. We watch them make mistakes, experience disappointment, wrestle with difficult circumstances, and discover things about themselves along the way.

We laugh with them.

We hurt with them.

We root for them.

And sometimes, their struggles make us think about our own.

That's one of the things I love about Christian fiction. A story can entertain us while also reminding us of God's presence, His grace, forgiveness, hope, and the possibility of redemption.

That's what I hoped to create with my Hopeville Bay series.

Hopeville Bay is a small-town Christian fiction series, but the short stories aren't simply about living in a nice little town where everything works out perfectly. My characters face real struggles, make imperfect choices, and have to wrestle with questions about love, relationships, faith, and the past.

And each book has its own story.

Her Broken Road

In Her Broken Road, you'll meet Elianna, a young woman who dreams of being a loving wife. She believes this is what she is meant to do with her life, but her journey doesn't unfold the way she expects.

Instead, she experiences a series of heartbreaking disappointments that leave her questioning whether the love she longs for will ever become a reality.

Her story is a modern reimagining of the Samaritan woman's story in John 4. As Elianna works through her pain and disappointment, she begins to look at her life and her faith in a different way.

It's a story about heartache, hope, and discovering that the road we take isn't always the road we expected.

Yesterday's Chains

If you've read Her Broken Road, you'll have caught a glimpse into Elianna's mom's story.

Yesterday's Chains tells the rest of it.

Pamela Maloney has made poor choices, and those choices have consequences. But she's also facing another difficult question: Can she let go of the past?

Inspired by the biblical story of Lot's wife, Yesterday's Chains explores what can happen when we remain tethered to yesterday instead of moving forward.

Pamela's story is about choices, consequences, letting go, and the possibility of becoming the person God wants us to be.

The Silent Evangelist

Then there's The Silent Evangelist.

This one is a little different.

Emily is struggling with a question many of us can probably relate to in one way or another: What happens when God wants us to do something that takes us outside of our comfort zone?

Emily has to wrestle with the tension between doing what God wants and staying where she feels comfortable.

And sometimes obedience requires us to take a step before we know exactly what the outcome will be.

I won't tell you where Emily's journey takes her because that is part of the story you'll have to discover for yourself.

But I will say that writing Emily's story made me think about the ways we can sometimes know what God is asking us to do while still wishing He would ask us to do something a little easier!

That's one of the things I enjoy about writing Christian fiction. The characters don't always have everything figured out. Sometimes they struggle with the very things we struggle with.

The Hopeville Bay series brings these three stories together, but each book has its own focus and its own journey.

There is heartache.

There are difficult choices.

There are questions about faith.

There are relationships to navigate.

And there is hope.
